Think
of a bed rest pillow as an armchair, but portable. Nicknamed
'husband pillows', these are typically big square sturdy pillows with
arm extensions.

Because backrest pillows are stiffer than bed or decor pillows, you get great support while reading in bed. And they are more comfortable than leaning against a hard headboard or the other extreme - pillows that are too soft.
The types of fabric
used for covering them provide some friction, so you aren't sliding off
like you would with satin pillow shams. So you can read uninterrupted
as late into the night as you can stay awake. 
The
extended arms let you rest your elbows while holding your book. Really
nice if you are a late night reader or you like to stay up late watching
television.
Between the firm stiffness and the armrests, the bed rest pillow provides support to ease symptoms of back pain and discomfort. Because of this, they are sometimes referred to as 'backrest pillow'. Some types can be used as car seats, allowing you to rest your arms as you drive. However, if you use yours at home, consider how you will store it when you aren't using it - say for instance, when you have guests sleeping over.

How to Clean Your Bed Rest Pillow
Backrest pillows are kind of oddly shaped so how do you clean them? If you are using one to read or watch TV at night, you might accidentally spill a drink or food and cause a stain. To make cleaning a snap, buy a bedrest pillow that either has a zipper enhanced cover that you can remove to clean or a pull over cover that can you can just take off.
If you have already purchased a bed rest pillow that doesn't have a removable cover, you can either have it dry-cleaned or use a can of spray upholstery cleaner.
